Summer 2010, off to a great start

The summer is finally here with lots of sunny skies. I have been pretty busy leading into these dog days. Three major weddings shot in June. Completed shooting 8 High School seniors grad images and a few family portraits. Lokking forward to a few weeks off. With the advancement of wireless technology in todays world todays media companies are quickly adapting to using impact-full visual media with consumers. In Ontario, Metro grocery stores have released 45 mobile Recipe kiosks at 15 stores in the GTA. These wireless kiosks are like a interactive recipe book on steroids. Using a large LCD screen as the visual message to the consumer it invites you to use the chest level touch pad for a product knowledge of sponsoring brands. Similar a bank machine, within seconds you maneuver thru a series of screens that provide recipe idea’s. It prints out the selection recipe you have made below the screen with isle identification of where to pick the products up in store. Very cool.

I have worked with both Metro and Pi Media in the roll out by sponsoring one of the brands, Windsor Salt. If you are in the GTA, visit one of these test stores:

Sweet Paradise Bakery

Next time you visit Hamilton’s Sweet Paradise Bakery take a look around at the store. They have spent the last 6 months renovating the store. I have had a active roll in the final stages in supplying a digital screen network. Placed above the deli and the bakery these 52 inch screens look great !

They run a continuous loop fed thru the internet providing advertising content to the store and their consumers. Some of my recent photography is included in the advertising. Here is a image of screen above the deli taken with my iphone.

Who said Communion Images Need to be Boring…

Wow, before you know it spring will be just around the corner. With spring comes the Communion season. Over the past few years I have really grown in the Communion portrait area of my photography business. People seem o want more of a casual look to their images for their children. When setting up for a session I incorporate both traditional and modern portraits. If you have been to the studio at 270 Sherman you will realize that this setting offers both of best options.

Each session starts in the studio against a backdrop that is chosen to compliment the child’s attire. These images are more formal and we compliment the images with the use of keepsakes.

Once the traditional images are complete, we work our way around the facility and create more modern images of your child. The use of the building as a backdrop opens endless options for creating stunning images. Large open windows with natural light, 100 year old brick walls that show their age. Moving the session outdoors allows for additional creativity with the use of staircases,fire escapes and loading docks meant for horse and buggies. Its like stepping back two centuries.

Due to the shortness of the communion season, booking your session is key. Dates are available but they will fill up very quickly. Have been quite busy over the last few weeks so here are some things that have been going on around the studio.
-organized and completed a 40 family one day shoot on Dec 12th. It was a great success and we raised over $1200 with net proceeds being $750 to a local charity. You can see all of the images on section on the site called Geoff’s store.
-in November two other photographers joined using the space @ 270. Marta and Julie moved in November. They are a great addition to the facility and have a ton of experience in the Hamilton market.
-signed two weddings for 2010 in December which will be alot of fun.

Well today was a perfect day, the sun was out and the trees were loosing their leaves. Not sure how much longer the weather and fall will be. So we go together with Vinnie and his mom and dad and headed to an area where we could grab some frames of the family rolling in the leaves…to motivate Vinnie a pocket full of Smarties paid dividends.

We ventured down the highway on Saturday to walk around Yorkville to during a very busy Saturday night. The streets were packed with people looking for their favourite stars. We hung around the main section of Yorkville and we were able to get a quick shot of a Michael Moore coming out of Hazelton Lanes. The girls also caught an image with Miss Canada 2010. The last stop was SOTO SOTO on Avenue Road, we heard Oprah was in the restaurant and as you can see the crowd started to grow. We had confirmation that she was inside and was going to come out. The ladies in front of us had a few images of Mary J Blidge who had just left. The paparazzi were starting to gather around us and the cops were controlling traffic. Well we waited….and waited….then we decided to leave as it seemed to be all for nothing as she might of slipped out the back.

I have made some major changes to my site over the past 2 months. I moved away from the flash based site and into a BLOG format. It is easy to read and allows for posting of information vs just images. I have the ability to also link to various sites including YOUTUBE. The other area which I invested in is in a web store. The store is linked to my site under the main menu section called “Geoff’s Online Store”. This is a very cool site that I believe is offered by only me in the Greater Hamilton market. I have done my research and I have not found one yet that has gone to this extent in developing this platform. The majority are still under the old school way of processing shoots. This new platform provides many options for my clients via the online store.

-private online gallery/proofing of images.
-selection of images as “favorites”.
-print size selection via the gallery for small to HUGE prints in both Canvas and Premium Papers.
-Cropping of the prefered images.
-Colour Tone selection of the selected images.

Athletic Wear Shoot|Hamilton Ontario Photographer Geoff Carruthers

This afternoon I met a few moms and their daughters for a shoot at the local soccer field. I used a off camera flash in most of the shots to give the images a bit of edge. The sky had big white clouds which is always a treat to shoot against as the backdrop, plus its free! I have been working thru a small technical issue over the last month or so. I had a important piece of equipment finally give out after a few years of using it(a thing called a pocket wizard). I am in the states this week so I will see if I can pick one up as a replacement. It will help me add a few more lights to the next couple of shoots.
